What is funnel marketing strategy?

A funnel marketing strategy is a plan for guiding people from first learning about a problem to becoming a lead, customer, and repeat buyer.

At the top of the funnel, people may only be discovering the problem. In the middle, they are learning about solutions and comparing options. At the bottom, they are deciding which provider to trust and whether to act.

My favorite customer journey framework is Eugene Schwartz’s five stages of customer awareness: unaware, problem aware, solution aware, product aware, and most aware. Someone who barely understands the problem needs different content than someone already comparing providers.

Thanks to AI search, many prospects now reach your website after they’ve already researched the problem, explored possible solutions, and started comparing products/services. By the time they land on your site, they may be much closer to making a decision. (Is your web content AI ready?)

A strong funnel matches the message to each stage. Useful content, search visibility, and ads build awareness. Landing pages, case studies, emails, and follow-up build trust. Clear offers and fast responses help ready buyers take action.

We want to meet prospects where they are in their buying journey, answer the questions holding them back, and make the next step easy.
